The training grounds at Cantonigros
UNA MES AL UNIO ESPORTIVA CANTONIGROS

Saturday, 5 August

CANTONIGROS, Spain _ One more training session at UE Cantonigros; one last night in the mountains of Catalunya; countless stories to tell.

The last time on the field of UE Cantonigros was spent in a full-field scrimmage, with a little intervention by Paul, Jorge, our very-out-shape reporter and a local Argentine ringer named Marcelo.

A 5-4 victory by the "maroons" over the "yellows" came thanks to two goals by Marcelo, one each by Dan Greb, Jon Majoros and Seumas Trull and despite the shaky goalkeeping of the unidentified reporter, who was chipped by both Dave Mangone and Collin Hayes, beaten by Laura Greb on a breakaway and made to look foolish by a left-footer by Kyle Roach inside the post.

The final night was celebrated with a sampling of the delicacies at "Can Colom" next door to the Cabreres hostel, a selection of "embutits" including chorizo (a spicy dried meat like pepperoni), fuet (a typical albeit milder cured sausage) and formatge (cheese). It was so popular, some of the gang decided to get some of the offerings "to go" (to Barcelona).

Dolors and Manel Colom treated the gang because we were "amigos de Paul" -- EVERYBODY knows Paul in this town.

But as we prepare to leave our training home for the past week, no trip to Cantonigros would be complete without visiting La Foradada, otherwise known as "the Hole". It's the beginning of a canyon and stream that Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid would be proud of _ a 20-minute walk down the mountain, past the UE Cantonigros field, where vehicles can't go.

It may not exactly be the Grand Canyon, but a unique place nonetheless.
